Joint opposition in Pakistan Parliament
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s opposition parties have agreed to form a joint opposition in Pakistan Parliament. Moreover, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman announced after a meeting of opposition leaders in Islamabad.
Fazl said the alliance would seek to play a more effective role through Parliament as the country faces worsening law and order conditions, growing challenges to the government’s writ and what he described as inadequate preparedness to deal with major national crises.
The announcement followed a meeting of opposition leaders at Fazlur Rehman’s residence on Friday night.
Opposition alliance to work from Parliament
Addressing a joint press conference after meeting, Fazl said opposition parties agreed to form joint opposition in Pakistan Parliament.
Moreover, they will coordinate their efforts through the parliamentary platform.
Officials said the country faced a serious law and order situation.
Two provinces experienced conflict, and the government’s writ faced challenges.
According to Fazl, opposition parties had discussed similar concerns previously. However, the situation had not improved.
The JUI-F chief said the new parliamentary arrangement aimed to empower opposition parties. Furthermore, it would help them take more effective measures and present a coordinated political position.
Achakzai warns of international legal action
National Assembly Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai said the responsibility for protecting Pakistan rested with its people.
He criticized the government over the presentation of what he described as the country’s fifth budget.
Moreover, he questioned the functioning of Parliament.
Parliament is the source of political power, he said. He argued that it is increasingly being turned into an arena for political conflict.
He also warned that the opposition could approach international courts.
If forced to act, the opposition could approach international courts.
PTI signals potential street politics
PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja said opposition parties were currently working to unite within Parliament.
He indicated that the alliance’s political strategy could expand beyond Parliament. Moreover, the ‘next phase’ would involve taking the opposition’s politics to the streets.
The remarks suggest that the emerging alliance could pursue a two-stage political strategy.
Furthermore, initially focusing on parliamentary coordination, it could then expand its activities outside the legislature.
Opposition leaders attend meeting
The meeting brought together senior representatives from several opposition parties. This gathering highlighted a united stance.
Attendees included National Assembly Opposition Leader Mahmood Khan Achakzai, and Senate Opposition Leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas.
Additionally, PTI leaders Asad Qaiser, Junaid Akbar and Salman Akram Raja were also present.
JUI-F was represented by Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri, Senator Kamran Murtaza, Senator Maulana Abdul Wasay, Engineer Ziaur Rehman, and other parliamentarians and party leaders.
The formation of a joint opposition bloc could provide opposition parties with a more coordinated platform in Parliament. Moreover, they aim to challenge government policies and raise concerns over governance, security, and the country’s political situation.
