ISLAMABAD: Jamaat-e-Islami chief Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has expressed deep concern over the incident at Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), saying the tragedy has left the nation deeply distressed and exposed serious shortcomings in governance and public safety.
Speaking as the Jamaat-e-Islami protest against the petroleum levy and rising inflation entered its 12th day, Hafiz Naeem criticised the government over what he described as widespread administrative failures and corruption.
He said there was no effective security system at PIMS and questioned the lack of proper training and safety protocols for doctors and hospital staff.
Hafiz Naeem said the government could not avoid responsibility by arguing that incidents such as child abductions occur elsewhere. He described the alleged theft of a child from a government hospital as a serious failure that required accountability.
The Jamaat-e-Islami leader also criticised the suspension of government officials following the incident, calling such measures insufficient unless all those responsible were held accountable.
He alleged that every major tragedy was followed by administrative action only after the event, rather than preventive measures being introduced beforehand. He also criticised the overall quality of governance in Islamabad.
Hafiz Naeem further alleged that the use of contaminated or previously used syringes was contributing to the spread of HIV among children in Karachi and accused the Sindh government of failing to provide adequate public services.
Jamaat-e-Islami Protest Enters 12th Day
Referring to the ongoing protest, Hafiz Naeem said Jamaat-e-Islami workers and supporters had continued their sit-in despite the passage of 12 days.
He reiterated the party’s demand for a reduction in petrol prices and the withdrawal of the petroleum levy. He also called for the termination of what he described as unjust agreements with independent power producers (IPPs).
Hafiz Naeem said the protest was not aimed at securing benefits for the party but was being conducted in the interest of the wider Pakistani public.
He added that the campaign had helped raise public awareness about the IPP agreements and the economic burden faced by ordinary citizens.
